A narrative understanding of “Maternal Near Miss” among U. S. women of color

Investigator: Natalie D. Hernandez, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, and Interim Director, Center for Maternal Health Equity

Overall Goal(s) of the Research: To identify risk factors for life-threatening maternal outcomes.

Specific Aim of the Research: 

  • To investigate women’s experiences related to the burden of severe maternal morbidity using a narrative/storytelling approach

Outcomes of the Specific Aim:

  • assessment and review of risk factors that contribute to severe pregnancy complications;
  • documentation of the underlying causes of maternal near misses including exploring community context and the complexities of the social determinants of maternal morbidity;
  • assessment of clinical causes of maternal morbidity.
